The Hobbit and Sherlock star, Martin Freeman, was an intriguingly late addition to the cast of Captain America: Civil War. Marvel Studios even declined to reveal exactly whom Freeman will be playing in the film.
While Freeman has held on to that secret, he has offered new hints about what his character is doing in Civil War and how he relates to Captain America and the Avengers.
âHe works for the American government,â said Freeman. âHe works in conjunction with the superheroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroesâ power, I suppose. So youâre not quite sure which side heâs on. It looks a little bit like heâs playing one game when actually heâs playing another. Itâs the kind of character I like because itâs ambiguous and because you donât know whether heâs good or bad. I like that area that isnât black or white, I like the grays, because I think thereâs just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.â
Given that Captain America: Civil War is introducing Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, the early speculation was that Martin will play Everett K. Ross, an envoy from the American government who was introduced during the classic Black Panther run by writer Christopher Priest. While the character that Martin describes sounds darker than Rossâ more comical portrayal in the Marvel Universe, itâs not entirely out of the question.
Captain America: Civil War will be released on May 6th, 2016.
