Thanks to FunnyorDie.com, comedy websites are all the rage these days. While most come and go, there are a few exceptions that have stuck around over the years (College Humor for example), and today, after a soft launch over the past few months, we are officially getting a new one: From Marlon Wayans and Funny or Die co-founder Randy Adams comes WhatTheFunny.com.
The goal of What The Funny is to give voice to the urban comedy market, something Wayans accomplishes quite well in his stand-up. Eventually, the team hopes to grow the site (which soft-launched last November) into a new, independent source for laughs outside of major video sites such as YouTube. âYouTube is a great way for emerging artists to garner an audience, but a very difficult place to build a sustainable business,â Adams said. âWe are helping YouTube artists actually make money by sharing higher advertising revenue with them and giving them and off-YouTube destination for their content.â
What The Funny serves as more proof of how content creators are working to maintain control over their work. Look for What the Funny content to show up online and, we hope, on Rokus and Apple TVs everywhere.
Well, I just looked at the site. While I like the idea of it, having one of their shows called the “WTF Podcast”, is either a grave oversight, or just simply a really bad move, morally and businesswise. I’m pretty sure Marc Maron could easily make a case and sue them if he’d like to. I hope they simply lengthen the name to “What The Funny Podcast” and avoid the backlash.
