There are potential spoilers ahead for Hulkâs status quo in Thor: Ragnarok. If you donât want to know what could be happening with Marvelâs jade giant then you should stop reading now. Youâve been warned!
Near the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Mark Ruffaloâs Hulk pulled a disappearing act and deliberately decided to leave the team behind. Ruffalo is slated to reprise his role as the Hulk and Bruce Banner in Thor: Ragnarok, and that film may explore the implications of the Hulkâs decision.
âHe’s on the run,â said Ruffalo during an interview with AICN. âI think that we carry that through… It’s very subtle, but the Banner/Hulk consciousness is beginning to meld a little bit. Who decided to leave? Was it Banner or Hulk? It’s not really in the (cinematic) mythology of Hulk up until that moment to be that conscious and pro-active. It’s interesting, right?â
âI think it’s really exciting where we could go with it,â continued Ruffalo. âNow I feel like we’re kind of in No Man’s Land. I mean, the comic books have kind of broached the subject, but we’re moving away from the traditional Hulk/Banner relationship. We’re starting to mess with it a little bit.â
Most of the previous Hollywood adaptations of Hulk have centered on the classic Banner and Hulk relationship that originated in the â60s. But as Ruffalo alludes to, Marvelâs comic book universe has featured multiple Hulks and Banner fused into a single personality, as well as occasions when Banner’s mind controlled the Hulkâs body. There have also been a few smart Hulks, who had their own personalities along with greater cognitive abilities. Potentially, Thor: Ragnarok could give Ruffalo the opportunity to portray some of those changes.
Thor: Ragnarok will be released on July 28, 2017.
