Friday, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim got fans very excited when he tweeted this image:

What fans THOUGHT they were seeing was a tease for the possible introduction of the Metal Men to the DC Television Universe. Created by Dr. Will Magnus, The Metal Men were 6 highly advanced androids, taking the traits and “personalities” of the metals their bodies were formed: Gold, Platinum, Lead, Tin, Mercury, and Iron. (Sapphire and Steel sat this one out.)
However, while the image IS a tease, it wasn’t the one everyone had originally thought. It was actually a DC Easter Egg, referring to Newstime Magazine. Newstime is the Newsweek of the DC Universe, where Clark Kent actually worked for a time. Some of you may remember Newstime from the “Death of Superman” storyline, and this iconic image…
Guggenheim WAS giving us a DC reference, just not the one some fans were hoping for. When one door of speculation closes, another one opens. Is this just a reference to Newstime, or is Guggenheim trying to throw fans off the trail, preparing to reveal something even bigger down the road?
Legends of Tomorrow, starring Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, and Wentworth Miller (among others) will premiere this January on the CW.
So, what do you think? IS Guggenheim misdirecting everyone? Do you feel the Metal Men still have a chance of showing up on Legends of Tomorrow? Let me know on Twitter or sound off in the comments below.
