Exciting news from an exclusive announcement via BuzzFeed yesterday: new members of the highly anticipated Syfy show adapted from Lev Grossman‘s bestselling The Magicians trilogy have been announced, and they look incredible!
Fans of the books knew from previous announcements and the recently released trailer for the show that some of the title characters were already cast. The lead magician, Quentin Coldwater, will be played by Jason Ralph (Aquarius). His cohort was rounded out with Hale Appleman (Smash) and Summer Bishil (Towelhead) as his fellow Physical kids Eliot and Margo (aka the book’s Janet). Additionally, the preview shows Arjun Gupta (Nurse Jackie) as Penny and Stella Maeve (Chicago PD) as the mysterious Julia. The announcements yesterday have added the powerful Alice Quinn to the cast with Olivia Taylor Dudley (Chernobyl Diaries).
In addition to Dudley’s casting, Syfy also announced a few more crucial roles that will be recurring in the first season. Esmé Bianco will play a pivotal role as the paramedic who readers will remember from Quentin’s earliest moments as a magician.
Rick Worthy (The Vampire Diaries) was announced as Brakebill’s Dean Fogg.
Anne Dudek (Mad Men) will play Professor Sunderland.
The show will not begin airing on Syfy until 2016, but fans of the books (like me) get more and more excited with every casting announcement. As with any adaptation of a favorite book series, there is always the chance that hopes will be dashed, but the first look trailer has me at the edge of my seat waiting for more. The books are prime material for adaptation with great storytelling, opportunities for interpretation, and the chance to bring a truly magical show to the screen. These casting choices only have me looking more avidly at my calendar hoping the months move faster. GIVE ME THE SHOW SYFY!
