M.I.A. Drops New Track, Calls Out NFL Over Disputed Super Bowl Performance

British rapper, activist, producer, and all-around Renaissance woman M.I.A. has been… missing from the recorded-music scene since she released her song, “Borders,” back in November. Now, the controversial artist is back in politically charged style with a new extended track, “Boom ADD,” which puts none other than the National Football League on the sonic hot seat.

If you don’t recall, or missed it all together, during her Super Bowl XLVI halftime performance with Madonna and Nicki Minaj, M.I.A. flipped the metaphorical bird at the camera—as well as the millions of people watching at home—which caused the NFL to take notice (read: sue her for $16.6 million). In “Boom ADD,” an extended version of her 2013 track, “Boom (Skit),” M.I.A returns fire at the NFL, opening her track with what sounds like her lawyer explaining to her exactly what the behemoth sports league aims to do to her.

The voice, which again, presumably belongs to her lawyer, says at the beginning of the track that “It’s NFL vs. M.I.A., right…one, they’re suing you for damaging their fantastic reputation by flipping the bird. The other part, they wanted to reserve the right to sue you later, to make you pay for any damages they had…” M.I.A. then launches into her lyrical lambast, which includes references to the Super Bowl performance (“Let you into Super Bowl, you tried to steal Madonna’s crown”), as well as what sounds like America’s unfair treatment of India.

If you want to check out what M.I.A. thinks of the NFL’s lawsuit against her, in no uncertain terms, you can watch her 2013 response to the whole ordeal in the NSFW video below:

What do you think about M.I.A.’s new track and her beef with the NFL? Should she have to face repercussions for her unexpected middle finger, or is the NFL way out of line? Let us know in the comments section below!
