Lucy Lawless Joins MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.

As it progressed, the first season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. grew into something more than anyone expected, and one of the main reasons why was the fantastic side-characters that appeared on the series. From Saffron Burrows’ Victoria Hands to Patton Oswalt’s Eric/Billy Koenig, if there’s one thing Marvel’s always been good at, it’s casting both big and small roles across various projects. Knowing that, right before Comic-Con no less, TV Guide has unveiled a brand new actress that will coming to the show next fall–Lucy Lawless.

According to the outlet, Xena herself is coming to the series in season two. Unfortunately – though not at all surprising – the outlet is unaware of what role (or for how many episodes) the actress will be playing on the show. Considering prior work, her casting could go anywhere from top X-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to Asgardian. It seems we’ll just have to wait until the fall – or at least this weekend – to know exactly what Lawless will have in store for Team Coulson.

The next season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is shaping up very nicely. It’s going to be interesting to see how the team deals with the task of rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D., in addition to how the series will set things up for Avengers: Age of Ultron in May. If it ends up being anything like the way things went with Captain America: The Winter Soldier this past season, then we’re in for one hell of a treat.

  1. I’m pulling for her to be an Asgardian.

  2. Cory says:

She was broken hearted when she heard Actor Kevin Smith/Ares died shooting a late film in China/The Great Wall in 2003. He did a stunt, not a stunt man flipped snapped his neck, cracked it with no harness and died of internal bleeding. RIP Kevin. She loved him before she married her husband Robert Tepper both the Hercules and Xena Executive Producer.

  3. James says:

Lucy Lawless is amazing, loved her Xena series and the variety of talents she brought to that show. Can’t wait to see her in one of my favorite current shows 😉

  4. She is so talented. Action, drama, comedy, singing, dancing, slapstick….
And that was only on Xena. Really hope she’s a regular on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, she’ll definitely improve the already good ratings. Imagine if she joins the Marvel cinematic universe in an Avengers film. Joss will get to direct Xena as well as Buffy. Awesome sauce.

  5. Joshua Smith says:

    HELL YEAH!!!

  6. John dorian says:

I just want to start a female thor coming to sheild rumor…..

  7. Aquasnakes54 says:

Kind of odd as they could have added Cobie Smulders as Martha Hill, as she have been on the show already as well as the movie.  And Cobie could bring her HIMYM fan base.

  8. Am I the only one that saw this announcement and immediately thought of her playing the Countess Valentina Allegra de Fontaine?

  9. patti says:

Will watch…Lucy glad to see you!!  Oh, and Xena too!!

  10. DRHBashur says:

Freaking AWESOME! Great news to get first thing in the morning.

  11. Peyton says:

“As it progressed, the first season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. grew into something more than anyone expected,”

Not true. Whedon fans knew the show would start out slow and build into something awesome.

You are also crediting Marvel for something that is another Whedon hallmark, clever, nerd fanservice, casting across various projects.

I think the casting of Lucy Lawless is awesome but it’s exactly what I have come to expect from the Whedons.

  12. Samgreycat says:

    Can’t go wrong with Lucy!!!

  13. Aaron says:

I was just listening to The Bitter Suite on my mp3 player yesterday.  Can’t get enough Xena!

  14. kate says:

She would make an amazing wonder woman!!! (I know, I know, not marvel- but man, would she ever!)

  15. I loved her as D’Anna in BSG so it’s a thumbs up from me!

  16. My husband and I make Shield a date night and we can hardly wait til it starts again.

    • Jimbo says:

      That’s really sad

      • Nate says:

Because two people that enjoy something together take the time to do so?
Know what’s sad?  People who are too immature to understand the value in this so they have to make an obtuse statement to make up for their own life’s emptiness and shortcomings.
Come back when you grow up child.

  17. Maui says:

I only wondered who else is next up in line for being in a show like this?  Karl Urban? What other NZ actors should be in this Maybe?

  18. Jet__Girl says:

    YES YES YES!

  19. Paul says:

Really excited I hope they use her full potential

  20. Missy says:

YES, LOVE TO SEE LUCY LAWLESS IN THIS SHOW,! hope she will be around for the entire season, and then some.

  21. scottbd says:

    Excellent casting!!

  22. silent_one89 says:

Can’t be a skrull, I think Fox owns the rights for Skrulls, thus why we got some generic unknown aliens in the Avengers.

  23. Chad says:

Those weren’t generic unknowns…they were Chitauri, introduced in Volume 1 of The Ultimates.

  24. Sean says:

Fox owns the rights to the Super Skrull (the skrull with all of the Fantastic Four’s powers) but not the whole race.

  25. Conyn says:

Doubt a jump back in time? Hellooooooo!!!! This is a world based on “Comic Books”…. It Could Happen!!! 😉

  26. daniel says:

No, he hasn’t.  He was a frog, he was an alien.  The comics are not the mythology.

  27. Kevin Breen says:

Not making Thor a female. The female Thor is a new character who replaces him, and this being comics, he’ll be back sometime before THOR 3.

  28. Tray says:

Well Spider Woman was an Agent of S.W.O.R.D.  there could be that tie in

  29. Mike says:

Peggy Carter is not the only agent Carter in the comics

  30. AfghanAnt says:

    That’s his daughter.
