Loki Rules Asgard In THOR: THE DARK WORLD Deleted Scene

On December 8, the Amazon-exclusive Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase 2 Collection hits Blu-ray with six Marvel movies, a boatload of extras, and a few unexpected bonus scenes. Perhaps one of the biggest surprises is a newly revealed deleted scene from Thor: The Dark World in which Loki (Tom Hiddleston) achieves his life’s ambition as the new ruler of Asgard.

Marvel Studios has released “Loki’s Coronation” online to promote the upcoming Phase 2 Blu-ray set, and it’s quite a revealing sequence. In just under two minutes, it says everything about Loki’s desire to be adored by the Asgardians. Note that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is nowhere to be seen as Loki wields the mystical hammer, Mjolnir. Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander), Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), and Fandral (Zachary Levi) do appear, but only to bow to Loki.

Of course, it’s all an illusion — a comforting lie that Loki allows himself to believe in order to forget his current circumstances. At the end of The Avengers, Thor returned Loki to Asgard where he was imprisoned for his crimes. For an immortal God-like being, that punishment can last eons…and that’s just not Loki’s style.

Unfortunately, it’s clear why this scene can’t be reintegrated back into Thor: The Dark World. Apparently, Rene Russo – who played Loki’s adopted mother, Frigga – didn’t film all of her dialogue with Hiddleston, and some of her responses are only shown as onscreen text in this video.

This scene also foreshadowed the end of Thor: The Dark World, as Loki finally took Asgard’s throne…by assuming the identity of his adopted father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins). That cliffhanger will likely be addressed in the next sequel, Thor: Ragnarok in 2017.
