As much as the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer gave us a look at the lighter side of comic-book movies, the Super Bowl ad for Logan does the same for the opposite end of that spectrum.
As if the first trailers featuring Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt” weren’t foreshadowing enough, this trailer, featuring a haunting version of “Amazing Grace,” definitely lets us know that our favorite adamantium-laced mutant has a rough road ahead.
A lot of the footage we have seen before, from a 90-something Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) to both Logan and X-23 (Dafne Keen) going into berserker rages. We were able to spot a few new moments, however. One, in particular, giving us a good look at Stephen Merchant’s Caliban (Check out our coverage of multiple Calibans across the X-Universe here).
While the look and tone of this movie definitely match that of Mark Millar’s classic “Old Man Logan” storyline, it will be interesting to see what 20th Century Fox has done to make this version their own, since the MCU’s Hulk and Hawkeye are major players in the comic. Regardless, Logan looks completely different from the superhero movies we have seen over the past few years. Between this and Deadpool, Fox is carving their own niche into what a comic-book movie should be.
Logan, directed by James Mangold, hits theaters March 3rd, 2017.
