So far, all indications point to Logan being the best solo Wolverine movie, ever. Granted, that’s not terribly hard (X-Men: Origins Wolverine is largely considered the worst X-Men film of all) and The Wolverine was pretty decent, but never reaching the heights of true greatness. But every trailer and clip we’ve seen from Hugh Jackman‘s (supposedly) final outing as the feral, long-lived mutant suggests this one is going to be something special. And now, thanks to the folks at Entertainment Weekly, we have a new viral teaser for Logan that tells us even more of what kind of tone we might expect with this film.
The latest viral video is shot in grainy black and white and features a voice-over from Logan as he’s driving a limo. You can hear him calling a number he found in the Penny-Saver ads, asking about a boat that’s for sale (a 1996 Sunseeker), meant as a retirement gift “for his father.” I think we can safely assume the father in question here is the 90-year old Professor Charles Xavier, played by Patrick Stewart. Supposedly, based on comments made by director James Mangold, this film takes five to seven years past the hopeful “everyone lives happily ever after” ending of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Of course, this means everyone didn’t live happily ever after, as Xavier’s school has obviously closed up shop if he’s retiring, and Logan is no longer a teacherâwhich is why he’s reduced himself to being a limo driver, escorting bachelor and bachelorette parties and rich old people.  It should be noted that Logan goes by his real birth name James Howlett in the voicemail, meaning Professor Xavier has presumably helped him retrieve even his most long-lost memories.
If anything, this latest viral video teaser illustrates the current condition of Wolverine as a person, a character for whom it seems nothing can ultimately go right. When we first met him back in the original X-Men film, he was a drifter and a cage fighter, and no matter how many times he’s helped saved the world, happiness and long term peace of mind seem to elude him. Will he finally achieve these things in this film, especially if it’s truly meant as the last time we see Jackman wear the claws?  If he does, expect a trail of bloody bodies on the way to peace and contentment.
Logan, directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, and Sienna Novikov as Laura Kinney, a.k.a. X-23, hits theaters March 3rd, 2017.
