Rage Against The Machine hung it up in 2000, and since then, vocalist Zack de la Rocha has done a few things on his own, like guest on Run The Jewels’ “Close Your Eyes,” and release an EP as part of the duo One Day As A Lion in 2008. Beyond that, though, fans have been really yearning for a true de la Rocha solo album, and that just hasn’t happened yet.
Rumors have popped up at various points during this millennium about this actually coming to fruition, but they’ve been largely unsubstantiated. Now, however, it’s finally happening, and there’s even a real-as-day, honest-to-goodness song to prove it.
de la Rocha shared a new song today called “digging for windows” (literally shared; there’s a free download on Soundcloud and BitTorrent), and much like Rage Against the Machine spin-off group Prophets of Rage, it’s fiercely political in nature, with lyrics like, “I stare at a future so toxic / No trust in the dust of a promise / Won’t mark the name on a ballot / So they can be free to devour our options.”
The aggressive track, produced by El-P of Run The Jewels, is the first off of an upcoming solo album from de la Rocha (as confirmed by Rolling Stone), which doesn’t yet have an announced title or release date. Until we learn more, listen to “digging for windows” above, and let us know what you think. We’d love to see El-P’s hands all over this project, as his loud and direct production are a perfect match for de la Rocha’s loud and direct vocals.
