Now, now, now â we’ve all done our fair share of tottering over Sunday’s Game of Thrones and the truly gut-wrenching, heart-stopping, and tragic death of one of its fan favorites (spoilers, sweeties): Oberyn Martell. But as we mentioned in our recap of “The Mountain and The Viper,” there’s a lot of other stuff at play in the episode, too. And it’s important not to overlook the major developments that the other characters have gone through. Thankfully, this week’s behind the episode video from HBO focuses on all of that. And it’s totally worth a watch.
Because despite the epic battle between Oberyn Martell and Gregor Clegane that ended the episode, there was a heck of a lot going on outside of that. Like the fact that Sansa’s growing up into a mini-manipulative Littlefinger clone, or Ramsay Snow’s officially recognized move into the Bolton family fold. To say nothing of Ser Jorah Mormont’s betrayal of Daenerys and subsequent dismissal, and that should-not-be-missed Tyrion Lannister monologue regarding his troubled cousin Orson Lannister and his obsession with beating up beetles for sport.
Naturally, the video also focuses in on Oberyn’s fatal flaw, with creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff waxing at length about The Red Viper’s positively Grecian way of existing â namely as a tragic character. His hubris, his pride, his desire to really stick it to Tywin Lannister for giving the order (or at least, approval) to murder Oberyn’s sister Elia Martell and her children: it’s all in there.
What part â outside of that epic battle because c’mon, guys â of “The Mountain and The Viper” was your favorite? Let us know in the comments.
Sansa played the game of thrones and won…
Arya’s laugh, without a doubt! We all want to know what the Hound’s grand plan is now!
Littlefinger’s wandering accent is going to make my head go the way of Oberyn’s
That’s exactly how they speak where he comes from…
I really loved seeing Sansa evolve in that episode. However, my favorite part of the episode, hands down, was Arya’s hysterical laughter at the bloody gates when they find out Lysa is dead.
