Lena Dunham Writing Mini Series for ARCHIE Comics

As of now, the upcoming advice book from Girls mastermind Lena Dunham, Not That Kind of Girl, is not the only highly anticipated project that Dunham is writing or has written this year. Newly anointed Archie Comics Chief Creative Officer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Afterlife with Archie, Glee, Carrie) has announced that Lena will be writing four Archie issues set to be published in 2015.

This is in part Aguirre-Sacasa’s new direction for Archie after having critical success with Afterlife with Archie breathing new life into the students of Riverdale High School. In a press release, he elaborated on Archie Comics’ new creative mandate: “My top priority is to find new ways to showcase our great lineup of properties – from the Archie gang to Josie to Sabrina to the Red Circle heroes – to current fans, to new fans. We have the best characters in the world, and I want to make sure everyone knows it.”

Those that might be skeptical, take note that Dunham has been a longtime fan of Archie and will no doubt bring something refreshing and rich to a series of comic books that first started in the ’40s.  “I was an avid Archie collector as a child — conventions, first editions that l kept in plastic sleeves, the whole shebang,” said Dunham. “It has so much cultural significance but also so much personal significance, and to get to play with these beloved characters is a wild creative opportunity.”

Aguirre-Sacasa also has faith in Dunham, adding that “Lena’s take on the Archie gang is funny and real and contemporary. It’s a stunning fit, and I know fans will be excited to read it. I am!”

Just off the prospects of dialogue, tone, and how far Dunham takes it make this really enticing for comic books and Girls fans. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. I. Am. So. Excited for this! I’m a huge fan of Dunham’s, and I feel like Archie comics were a lot of girls’ entree into comics at an early age. I know that they were mine. So, to me, Dunham and Archie are a perfect combo. Very much looking forward to it!
