Legoland California Unveils Gigantic LEGO Death Star

There are very few combinations of things in this world that get me as excited as “LEGO” and “Star Wars.” Well, other than maybe “beer” and “BLTs,” but since I don’t have the latter available at the moment, let’s all take a few minutes to nerd out over this gigantic LEGO Death Star!

As one of the newest additions to Legoland California, this humongous feat of LEGO-dom is 8 feet wide and 13 feet high and even features motorized LEGO X-Wings and Tie Fighters zooming around its… equator? Technically it had an equator, right? The display also has Luke’s famous trench run, although it’s still unclear if they covered the exhaust port in the name of keeping this display as un-exploded as possible.

Master LEGO Builder Robbie McCarthy was one of a team of 30 whose combined efforts finished the project in what Robbie estimates would have taken him a year to do had he worked solo. Get it. Solo?! To make up for that pun, here’s a quadcopter video of it being put together.

Weighing in at an impressive 1900 pounds, it certainly outweighs most anything we built as children, but we blame the fact that, since the use of forklifts is clearly necessary, we didn’t build anything that awesome due to safety reasons.

Sporting the iconic Death Star Superlaser, one can only hope that somewhere across the park are chunks of LEGO Alderaan strewn about. I immediately regret that statement because the idea of millions of LEGO minifig voices suddenly crying out in terror, and being suddenly silenced might be the saddest thought I’ve had in a while. Oh boy, well distract yourself with the pictures below while I go and think about all the unfortunate minfig Alderaan-ians. [Editor’s Note: The always morbid Blake Rodgers, everybody. Give him a hand.]

Who’s coming to Lego land with me? What Lego-fied Star Wars scene would you like to see made by the master builders? Let us know in the comments!
