One of the aspects that players loved about LEGO Marvel Super Heroes was the open-world approach to the gameplay. Luckily, their newest venture, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers, will be following in those footsteps. This time around, the game is based more on the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead of just the overall licensing of the comic book company, so there may not be nearly as many characters to choose from. To make up for that, though, the trailer above shows the open-world areas that players can adventure through as a member of the Avengers team.
It appears the storyline missions will only follow Marvel’s Phase 2 movies, set between Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Players will be able to explore Asgard and Svartalfheim from Thor: The Dark World, Tony Stark’s Malibu home from Iron Man 3, sections of Washington DC from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the S.H.I.E.L.D. base exterior from Avengers, and finally they can explore Sokovia, South Africa, and the Barton farm from Avengers: Age of Ultron. The one place that the trailer seems to be most proud of, though, is the gigantic, open-world version of New York City that players can run, jump, fly, and fight their way through. This makes the most sense, seeing as New York is the biggest part of Marvel lore.
As one can expect with any LEGO game there will be plenty of characters to choose from as you battle crime across the world. However, this time around the X-Men will not be included, due to Marvel not owning the film rights to those characters. More surprising, though, is the exclusion of Ant-Man, despite the fact that Wasp will be a playable character in the game. Then again, he could always get added on as DLC.
LEGO Marvel’s Avengers will be released for every gaming platform, other than smartphones and tablets, on January 26th, 2016. Be sure to let us know what you think of the trailer in the comments below.
