First Look at Netflix’s THE TOYS THAT MADE US’ LEGO Episode (Exclusive)

Spelling out the premise of its so show like many ’80s theme songs, the theme for Netflix‘s The Toys That Made Us proudly proclaimed, “Here’s an eight-part document-a-ree series…about the toys that made us!”So how come we only saw four episodes?

Season one, it turns out, was split in half, and the second part is coming online May 25. And if you thought all the heavy-hitters were accounted for, think again. Arguably the heaviest hitter in toys today is coming, and it is, of course, LEGO.

In an exclusive clip from that episode, we take a look at two of the themes that had a seismic impact on LEGO’s fortunes beginning in the ’70s. As a side bonus, we also learn why the original LEGO medieval castle was made with yellow bricks rather than gray, and it has nothing to do with The Wizard of Oz:

(Incidentally, that’s not Patton Oswalt narrating, but a near-soundalike named Donald Ian Black.)

“The LEGO episode was a lot of fun to make,” says show creator Brian Volk-Weiss, “in large part because we went to Billund, Denmark, to not only see how LEGOs are designed today, but we also saw many relics from their past, like the molds that made EVERY two-by-four brick that came out in the ’70s and ’80s all over the world, and got to interview some of the people who had worked at LEGO over 40 years ago.” He further describes the overall experience as “walking on sacred ground.”

The remaining episodes of season one will cover Transformers, Hello Kitty, and the first line they’ve featured to be made by multiple different license-holders: Star Trek. Are you excited for more toys that made you? Let us know in the comments.
