Marvel’s merry mutants have always fascinated and excited us in equal measureâtheirs are outsider origin stories steeped in the sort of darkness that’s perfect for today’s television landscape. So excuse us while we lose our minds over the first trailer for Legion, Fargo creator Noah Hawley’s adaptation of the story of David Haller, the mega-powerful mutant son of Professor Charles Xavier. Because holy crap, it looks so good that we barely have the words for it.
Starring Dan Stevens (The Guest, Downton Abbey) as Haller, the diagnosed schizophrenic whose many voices may not actually be an affliction, but an actualization of an extremely powerful set of skills. Throughout the twisty, topsy-turvy trailer we’re also introduced to several other characters (including Aubrey Plaza’s Lenny, Jean Smart’s Melanie, Rachel Keller’s Syd, Katie Aselton’s Amy, and Hamish Linklater’s mysterious interrogator) that will, in time, slowly reveal the truth of Haller’s addled mind. The visualization of all of this is as striking as it is inventive and unsettlingâperfect for this story if you ask me.
MAN, OH MAN, is the story of Charles Xavier’s unknown son going to be a real exciting, twisted ride. And we’re thrilled at the risk and tone Marvel is taking with this one: it feels like Inception, Fargo, Willy Wonka, and Jessica Jones went on a drug-fueled field trip together. (And yes that is a compliment.) The company continues to grow its television presence in new and exciting ways we’ve been hungry for when it comes to comic book TV.
But what do you think of the trailer? Are you as out-of-control excited about this show as we are? Can “Early 2017” just get here already? Let us know in the comments below.
