Legendaries Are Finally Coming To POKÉMON GO (If We Can Earn Them, That Is)

Despite a drop-off in active players, Pokémon Go is still chugging along and delivering on fan requests after its one-year anniversary. It recently celebrated by introducing creatures from the Pokémon Gold and Silver games to the app and by allowing players to capture Ash’s Pikachu, but now developer Niantic is really upping the ante by giving fans something they’ve wanted since the game’s beginnings, so long as they earn it.

Legendary Pokémon are finally coming to Pokémon Go.

Based on the trailer above, it looks like players will have a shot at getting the legendary birds from the first two games — Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Ho-oh, and Lugia — and perhaps even Mewtwo, if you want to read into the quick tease near the very end of the video. Capturing Pokémon this powerful won’t be easy, though, and you won’t be able to do it alone. If trainers in a raid battle come across a Legendary Egg at a gym, they’ll have a chance to cooperatively defeat a Legendary Raid Boss, and then they’ll get an opportunity to catch one of their very own.

All of this depends on what happens at Pokémon Go Fest at Chicago’s Grant Park on July 22, though:

If they manage to catch enough Pokémon during the Pokémon GO Fest Challenge Windows, the first Legendary Pokémon will be revealed in Grant Park. If the Trainers in Chicago succeed in defeating the Legendary Pokémon, that Pokémon will start appearing in Raid Battles around the world, after Pokémon GO Fest.

So, please don’t let us down, Chicago.
