Learn All About The Turing Test in This EX MACHINA Clip

A few short months ago, audiences met Alan Turing in director Morten Tyldum’s The Imitation Game. Though Benedict Cumberbatch offered a compelling portrayal of Turing as he toiled to break the German Enigma Code during World War II, the film’s title was something of a misdirect. The Imitation Game refers to The Turing Test, an experiment designed by Turing as a means to determine whether or not machines can think for themselves — in short, it is a means to assess true artificial intelligence. It is this very test that lies at the center of Alex Garland’s directorial debut, Ex Machina.

The recently released sci-fi film centers on a computer programmer (Domnhall Gleeson), who is invited by the CEO of his company (Oscar Isaac) to participate in a live Turing Test to determine the efficacy of what may be the first artificially intelligent humanoid (Alicia Vikander). The film has premiered to critical acclaim, with our own Scott Weinberg calling it “a fiercely intelligent piece of speculative fiction.” In case you haven’t seen it yet, we have an exclusive clip that should get you nearly as amped as you were for that midnight showing of Furious 7. The clip shows us a sit-down meeting between Caleb (Gleeson) and Nathan (Isaac) as they discuss the nature of the Turing Test, the underlying philosophical question that guides much of the film.

Ex Machina is in theaters now. Read our review here.
