It may have been “just for one day,” but on April 15, a date when slackers generally start panicking about their tax returns, James Murphy’s reunited band brought joy to the crowds at Coachella–and those of us who’ve seen the video since–with their cover of “Heroes,” as a tribute to the late David Bowie. It may be too late for Ziggy Stardust himself to appreciate, but via Spin, we’ve learned that Murphy also paid tribute to the legends in attendance, Guns N’ Roses, with a brief snippet of…well, listen for yourself and decide if they hold a candle to the original.

YouTube, I love you but you’re bringing me down…by showing me how much good stuff I’m missing live!
As our music editor Matt Grosinger pointed out, “Heroes” is a natural cover for LCD Soundsystem, since their own “All I Want” has a similar rhythm to it. It’s not legal-action close, but it’s no surprise to discover they’re Bowie fans.
As for the GNR tribute, ’80s Axl would probably have found a way to turn this into yet another of his many media feuds, but new Axl seems more mellow. Here’s hoping that during all the down time, he’s learned how to take a compliment.
If Axl and Murphy were to get into a fight, who would win? And whom would you like to see LCD Soundsystem pay tribute to next? Hit us up with suggestions below.
