Lawrence Kasdan Reveals When HAN SOLO Film Will Take Place

As fans who have seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens can attest: Harrison Ford’s Han Solo is still one of the most popular characters in the franchise. Which is probably why that scruffy nerf-herder is slated to be the first established character to headline his own Star Wars film in 2018. And though the search is currently on for an actor to portray the younger Han Solo, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan recently dropped a few hints about the new Han Solo movie—and according to Kasdan, it won’t be an origin story.

“It will not be here’s where he was born and this is how he was raised,” said Kasdan during an interview with Empire Magazine. “I think what it will be is, what was he like 10 years earlier, maybe a little earlier, you’ll get a glimpse. But [Akira] Kurosawa once said the heroes are the ones that are still changing and the villains are locked and petrified into what they are. And Harrison embodies in Force Awakens someone who is still not settled on who he is.”

While the Han Solo movie may not explore his origin, it could potentially depict the early days of his partnership with Chewie or his friendship with Lando. It also seems like a good opportunity to show audiences how Han won the Millennium Falcon from the ol’ Calrissian, too.

Kasdan is co-writing the Han Solo movie with his son, Jon, marking the elder Kasdan’s final Star Wars script. Kasdan previously co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens. The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are slated to helm the Han Solo film.
