The cast of Showtime’s revival of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult classic series Twin Peaks continues to grow, as it’s now being reported that actress Laura Dern, best known for her roles in movies like Jurassic Park and The Master, is joining the cast.
Dern has a long standing working relationship with series co-creator David Lynch, as one of her earliest roles was as the love interest to Kyle MacLachlan’s character in Lynch’s Blue Velvet. MacLachlan, of course, would later play the lead part of FBI Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks. Laura Dern would later star in two other Lynch films, 1990’s Wild at Heart, and the 2006 three-hour-long head-scratcher, Inland Empire.
Although it’s currently unknown just which role Dern would be playing, the speculation is that she’ll be playing Diane, Agent Cooper’s secretary. In the original television series, and in the prequel film Fire Walk With Me, Agent Cooper talks frequently into his mini cassette player, making tapes he then sends to his unseen secretary Diane back home. Some fans speculated that Diane is just the name that Cooper gave his tape recorder, but deleted scenes from the movie show Coop speaking to Diane in her office-although the character remains conveniently offscreen and inaudible.
Although only Kyle MacLachlan has offically been confirmed to be returning to Twin Peaks by Showtime, many other original cast members have been spotted on set in Washington state, as well as newcomers like Amanda Seyfriend and Jennifer Jason Leigh. No airdate for the new Twin Peaks has been given aside from sometime in 2017, but the folks at TV Line are suggesting that it will debut in the summer next year.
