It has been five years since Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us ripped out our hearts and left us emotional wrecks in the wake of Joel and Ellie’s story of survival in a world filled with monsters–both human and flesh-eating. After winning over 240 Game of the Year awards, The Last of Us has secured its place as one of the best video game stories ever created, and we’re ready to jump back in to the fungus-infested world of Joel and Ellie. At their annual E3 press conference on Monday evening, Sony capitalized on the hype for Part II with a first-look at gameplay from the hotly anticipated sequel since its initial announcement in 2016 and the bone-chilling trailer from earlier this year.
The trailer shows an older Ellie (voiced by Critical Role‘s Ashley Johnson) spending some hard-earned downtime at a dance with the other survivors in her settlement. A young woman takes her by the hand and the two begin dancing in the middle of the room, pulling each other ever closer until they finally share a kiss. Just as they lock lips the trailer smash cuts to a brutal act of violence as Ellie uses her knife to stab a man in the forest. We soon learn that the man may be getting his just desserts as it seems as though he is part of a cult that is rounding people up and murdering innocent people. From there, the trailer only gets crazier as Ellie must fight her way, tooth and nail, bullet and arrow through their ranks in order to escape. It serves as a grim reminder that this world is full of horrors lurking around every corner–and the worst ones of all are the ones who haven’t been mutated into monsters by the cordyceps fungus.
We will learn more about The Last of Us Part II this week at E3, so stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, watch this trailer and think about someone you love.
