No, Lady Gaga Is Not Playing Ursula in THE LITTLE MERMAID – Yet (Exclusive)

The Little Mermaid is one of the most anticipated of the Disney animated classics getting a live-action remake, especially with new music from Lin-Manuel Miranda, and following the major box office success of Beauty and the Beast. Recently, a casting rumor popped up on The DisInsider suggesting Lady Gaga was interested in a role in the film, and that the role was probably Ursula the Sea Witch. However, Disney has confirmed to Nerdist casting is not underway for this film–which still doesn’t have a director or principal star–so no, Gaga has not been cast as Ursula and the rumor is just that, a rumor.

Now, as much as we love Gaga, and as much as her acting career is on the rise after A Star Is Born, we think she should probably not be Ursula, for the simple fact that the character is plus-size and should remain that way. I don’t think anyone wants to see Gaga in a fat suit. Now when Ursula transforms into her disguise as Vanessa and tries to steal Prince Eric? Ok, we might want to cast a separate actress for that role, but as the tentacled Ursula, we vote that one down.

So who would be a good Ursula? Lea DeLaria from Orange is the New Black would be perfect, and the lady has got pipes. Rebel Wilson has already played Ursula at the live The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl in recent years, so we wouldn’t hate that either. Another favorite choice is former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Ginger Minj, whom a lot of folks online have been pushing for to be Disney’s live-action Sea Witch. She has the voice, the looks, the whole package. And considering that legendary drag queen Divine was the original inspiration for Ursula in the first place, it would only be fitting.

Who would you like to see tackle the part of the sassiest Disney villain ever? Share your thoughts with us down below in the comments.
