Last year, Tom Hanks‘ guest appearance on Saturday Night Live gave us one of our new favorite characters: David S. Pumpkins. But it turns out that Mr. Pumpkins was almost joined by his wife, and she would have been played by Lady Gaga.
While speaking with Vulture, SNL writer Streeter Seidell as well as cast members Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan shared the revelation that the original ending of the sketch would have introduced Lady Gaga as “Mrs. David Pumpkins.” As Day described it, Gaga’s character would have been “wearing a jacket with witches on it.” He added that “you think sheâs gonna say ‘Wanda Witches’ or something, but she goes, ‘Iâm Mrs. David Pumpkins.’ Of course his wife would be weird.”
Sadly, the SNL team noted that Gaga turned down the part to focus on her musical appearance on the show. ” I remember being so bummed,” recalled Seidell. “I was like, âOh man. That could have been the thing that put it over the edge.â
There is a silver lining in that report. Day also mentioned that Lady Gaga read the original script for the sketch and liked the idea of playing that role. So perhaps it is something that could be revisited on one of her future visits to SNL. Alternatively, David S. Pumpkins is getting an animated special this Saturday, October 28 on NBC. While there aren’t currently any indications that Lady Gaga will lend her voice to that show, perhaps another animated special could introduce her character.
