David Bowie will be on our screens again very soon and in a role we all love. To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Jim Henson’s scary-weird fairy tale movie Labyrinth (and the fact that I feel older than most dirt), Fathom Events is bringing the beloved nightmare-fueler back to cinemas this fall. USA Today is reporting that fans will be able to attend screenings of the movie from September 11 and 14, 2016, in select theaters nationwide ahead of the September 20 release of the 30th Anniversary special edition Blu-ray.
While the movie has had its fans since the beginning, and most people of my generation watched it as a child on cable or VHS tape, the sad passing of Bowie–who played the Goblin King Jareth–has brought Labyrinth back to the public eye, as did the troubling news that a remake was in the works. Tons and tons of people will surely be clamoring to see it all cleaned up and on the big screen, since most of us didn’t get to as wee ones.
Aside from Bowie, Labyrinth had a very impressive collection of creative types working on it, including a young Jennifer Connelly as the lead, fantasy conceptual artist Brian Froud, a script co-written by Monty Python‘s Terry Jones, choreography by Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s Gates McFadden (yes really), and of course Jim Henson in the director’s chair and his trademark puppetry taking center stage.
On top of carryover content like a making-of documentary and an audio commentary by Froud, the anniversary disc will also have a new 24-page “digibook” with photos, a featurette with Connelly and the Henson family discussing Jim Henson’s puppetry and filmmaking, an anniversary Q&A hosted by MythBusters‘ Adam Savage, and a Bowie remembrance by Connelly and Henson’s children. All in all, it’s going to be a pretty great September for fans of dancing magic dance.
