KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS Special-Edition Sneakers Are Perfect for Samurai Training

KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS Special-Edition Sneakers Are Perfect for Samurai Training

LAIKA is best-known for creating such stunning animated features as Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls. But thanks to their ties to NIKE (LAIKA was founded by NIKE co-founder Phil Knight), they also turn out special-edition designer sneakers for each film’s release. Below, you can get a look at the gorgeously crafted Kubo XV sneaker, dreamed up by famed NIKE designer Tinker Hatfield to toast the opening of LAIKA‘s latest, Kubo and the Two Strings.

And they could be yours, if the fates are with you.

Inspired by Japanese culture, Kubo and the Two Strings pits a young samisen player (Game of Thrones‘ Art Parkinson) and his samurai friend (Matthew McConaughey) against the merciless Moon King (Ralph Fiennes). Symbols of both good and evil can be seen in these special sneaks. The blue beast is one of the Moon King’s monstrous forms, while the red beetle is the samurai’s crest.

Following in the footsteps of Hatfield’s designer shoes for LAIKA’s previous films, Kubo XV sneaker is expected to be a prized collector’s item for 300 lucky fans. There are four ways to get your hands on these exclusive sneakers.

Beginning today, the first celebrates the interactive exhibit “From Coraline to Kubo/ A Magical LAIKA Experience,” held at Universal Studios Hollywood’s Globe Theatre. If you buy passes to the event at Kernel, you’re entered to win a pair of the coveted kicks.

The second is an auction, hosted on eBay on August 8. Dozens of pairs of the Kubo XV sneaker will hit the virtual auction block. All proceeds will go to the Just Keep Living Foundation, a charity founded by McConaughey to educate teenagers on the importance of health, education and active living.

If you’re more of a gamer, you’ll probably prefer option three. On August 11, the Moon Beast video game will rise at film’s official website. Players will battle the Moon King, as Kubo does in the film. And top scorers will not only win bragging rights, but also—yep, you guessed it—their own pair of Kubo XV sneakers. Official rules can be found here.

Lastly, Complex will also be hosting a giveaway, details to be announced “very soon.”

So, consider your strategy carefully, samurai! Ready yourself for battle, be it auctions, online raffles, or fighting off the Moon Beast. And in the meantime, marvel at the incredible details Hatfield has pulled from Kubo and the Two Strings, which hits theater August 19.
