News broke earlier today that the legendary Hideo Kojima had finally escaped Konami‘s clutches. We reported that the mastermind behind the Metal Gear series was already working on forming his new studio, and was in talks with Sony.
Well, apparently it didn’t take long for Kojima to decide what his new independent studio, Kojima Productions, will be doing. Sony Computer Entertainment’s, Andrew House, posted the above video to announce that Kojima’s next game will be a collaboration with Sony. The description of the video also states the game will be a console exclusive, so that there isn’t any confusion. That’s what we call a win.
Not much else is known at the moment, and as big of a deal as this is, it’s important to remember that we won’t be getting much information about the title for likely another few years. Still, this is insanity. Kojima had been previously seen having dinner with Sony’s Mark Cerny, so the quick decision is not surprising as this deal was probably already in the works.
Like I mentioned in our earlier report, this deal makes a whole lot of sense. PlayStation is synonymous with the Metal Gear Solid franchise, so this feels like a natural transition. I still believe that this exclusive deal can lead to the PlayStation brand adding Kojima’s team into their already impressive first-party stable.
I think it goes without saying that Sony just struck gold, even if the deal is just for one game. The wording is interesting though, since Sony is calling it a console exclusive, there’s a chance it will make an appearance on PC.
Look at Andrew House’s smug smile. He knows that Sony just got the biggest steal in the industry.
