With his latest film, Tusk, on the fast track for release later this year, director Kevin Smith is already hard at work on his upcoming projects. Recently, Smith announced that a script heâd co-written with Andy McElfresh (based on a recent podcast episode), a holiday horror anthology titled Comes The Krampus, was going to shoot shortly after the completion of the long-anticipated Clerks 3, which was going to begin production this April. But following a recent AMA Smith conducted on reddit, those plans have apparently changed.
Comes The Krampus will now be shooting in Clerks IIIâs April slot, and the latest sequel will be pushed back to an unspecified production date.
In the AMA, Smith said, âTusk represents something bold and new. No matter how bold I make it, Clerks III will always have a number in the title. It will never be new. It will rock, I assure you, and it will be a worthy final installment in my mini-mart magnum opus. But it’s predicated on something I did a long time ago. I wanna keep moving forward. SModcast Pictures is becoming exactly that: we’re starting to make movies based on podcasts. Tusk was the first, and now Comes the Krampus will be next.â Smith went on to say the film will feature a 20-day production and a budget under $3 million.
In theory, the quick pace of this new horror anthology could put the film right in line for a premiere at this yearâs TIFF, or next yearâs Sundance. Either way, the film should land distribution fairly quickly, as itâll be coming on the heels of A24âs release of Tusk.
Between the V/H/S series, The ABCs of Death, Chillerama and the recently announced sequel to Trick ‘r Treat, horror anthologies are making a comeback in a big way, and having a name like Kevin Smith throw his hat into the ring will make the genreâs return that much more intriguing, as well as possibly bring the genre back into the mainstream. Many of the specifics surrounding Comes The Krampus remain unknown, but Smith has said the film is âgonna be a SModCo CREEPSHOW, set at Christmas,â and there ainât nothing wrong with that in our book.
No, he said he was going to turn the (c)RAPTURE into a MUSICAL. Comes the Krampus is a completely different thing, I just found out about this, and I listen to the podcasts all the time, this is new.
When it comes to multiple movies with numbers in the titles I just hope our favorite characters that star in the films live long enough to be in it. I don’t believe clerks would be the same without the original actors. I have enjoyed all the films Kevin Smith has written. I also listen to his some of his podcasts, can wait for a Hollywood babble on inspired movie, Ralph is awesome.
It’s adorable when people think a director isn’t to blame for how shitty a movie is.
My mistake, remember Kevin saying on SModcast that he was going to make a movie based on that podcast but turns out it’s a different one. Nevertheless, that podcast is worth listening to because it’s hilarious.
Cop Out mostly sucked because Bruce Willis is a douchebag. That’s not really Kevin’s fault.
The podcast episode Comes the Krampus is based on is actually from six years ago—SModcast 52: (c)Rapture. Here’s a fan made trailer based on that podcast.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_PFX_T9fD4
Could the Krampus movie be based on/followed by the thre tales of Christmas horror set forth in the TESD Christmas Special – I for one would like to see the Dripping Saint and Father Blood on the big screen…
There will never be a Clerks 3.
From the first time I met you at the Chicago Film Festival in 1992 you have been my one of my biggest heroes. You have no Idea what I have been through but you will. I have found my chorus and grown so much in the last few months and it is largely because of you. Thank you.
He needs to Bryan Johnson in a movie again!
Cop Out isn’t actually a Kevin Smith movie. He directed it, but didn’t write it. So as far as the material goes…don’t blame him.
To be fair Kevin didn’t write Cop Out, he only directed it. It’s been the only movie he’s directed that he hasn’t wrote. So that’s part of the reason Cop Out sucked. He was only the hired gun to direct not write.
Loved Zach and Miri’s! Never saw Cop out, and sadly now that I know it was Smith’s, still never will because the trailer was absolutely horrid. Clerks, and Dogma still remain my top 2 of all time!
Kevin Smith could film himself droppin’ a deuce, and I’d watch it.
Yes, he’s my man crush.
Your…..There’s no word beyond fucked that explains something worse…Maybe you should see a psych because wanting to watch people shit… Espically a man crush is.. Nevermind forget it.
That’s really cool. Comes The Krampus by Kevin Smith? I hope its gonna be sweet!
I liked Zach and Miri, it’s underrated. Cop Out was trash.
He’s already said he isn’t retiring anymore. On a recent episode of SModcast he said he wants to make movies he feels only he could make. Doesn’t want to keep making Cop Outs and Zach and Miris.
I get the feeling that Kev wants Clerks 3 to be his last movie (he’s talked about not making movies anymore and maybe he’s thinking he’d like to end it where it began), but he keeps coming up with ideas that he wants to make. So Clerks 3 keeps getting put off.
