Kevin Feige Says Spider-Man ‘Belongs’ in The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Long before he was President of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige was an executive producer on Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man and its two sequels. Earlier this year, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios struck a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe beginning in Captain America: Civil War, with Feige once again shepherding Marvel’s superhero as a co-producer.

“Making that agreement … was great, and was really amazing, and on a personal level making these movies, it means a lot because I think we can do great things with Spider-Man,” said Feige during a press event for Avengers: Age of Ultron. “I think Spider-Man can serve great purpose in our universe and that’s where he belongs. That was what was unique about him in the comics was not that he was the only superhero in the world; it’s that he was a totally different kind of superhero when compared against all the other ones in the Marvel universe at the time.”

The Sony e-mail hack revealed that Marvel was interested in striking a deal for Spider-Man long before it became public knowledge. Until last February, that deal was extremely uncertain and Spider-Man’s role in Civil War wasn’t pinned down until very late in the process. However, Feige revealed that alternate plans were in place if Peter Parker’s famous alter ego was not available.

“The most important thing as a standalone is relaunching Spider-Man in his own standalone movie with his own storyline that fits into this universe,” concluded Feige. “That is job number one for us…The connectivity is great, but it doesn’t drive the train.”

Tom Holland will make his MCU debut as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016 before starring in a currently untitled Spider-Man film on July 28, 2017.
