With twenty films over the last ten years, it’s sometimes easy to forget that veteran actor and director Kenneth Branagh had a hand in creating the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it. Branagh directed the first Thor movie that was released in 2011, but he didn’t take an onscreen role for his lone MCU outing. However, the upcoming Blu-ray release of Avengers: Infinity War has revealed that Branagh finally found a role in Marvel’s movie-verse, in a very unexpected way.
Via Heroic Hollywood, Jeremy Conrad of MCUCosmic tweeted out that the commentary track on Infinity War confirms a previously held rumor that Branagh voiced the Asgardian distress call from the beginning of the film. Branagh’s character is heard but not seen as he desperately calls for help while Thanos’ forces mercilessly attacked a ship full of Asgardian refugees and massacre the citizens inside.
We can infer from his presence that Branagh’s unnamed Asgardian was present on Asgard during Hela’s brief reign in Thor: Ragnarok, and he was among the survivors who were forced to flee their homes. From there, the fate of Branagh’s character is somewhat dicey. It would be very easy to assume that he was killed alongside the rest of the Asgardian civilians when Thanos destroyed the ship and left Thor to die in space. That said, it’s also possible that Branagh’s Asgardian escaped his fate with a few characters who also skipped Infinity War, including Valkyrie, Korg, and Miek. It’s the faintest of hopes, but we’d still love to see Branagh appear in front of the cameras within the MCU.
