Keith Richards: Under the Influence is a new documentary set to premiere on Netflix September 18. Its focus, as you may have guessed, is legendary guitarist Keith Richards as he set out to record his first solo album in more than 20 years. 1992’s Main Offender was Richards’ last solo foray–not counting his 2010 compilation Vintage Vinos–so the prospect of fresh music on this year’s Crosseyed Heart will surely have fans clamoring for the new album.
The film is directed by Morgan Neville who’s Twenty Feet from Stardom, a documentary about longtime backup singers, recently won the Oscar for Best Documentary–so it’s clear Richards is in good hands. If you are wondering what the work of the Neville/Richards combo looks like, you can watch the video for Richards’ single “Trouble”, which was also directed by Neville.
The documentary will be a mixture of new and archived footage about the journey of creating Crosseyed Heart. The album, which will be released the same day, sounds incredibly promising especially because it features musicians such as Norah Jones, Aaron Neville, and Spooner Oldham. The album will also feature what may be the last recordings of late Rolling Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys.
It looks like September is shaping up to be one hell of month for Rock & Roll with this documentary on Netflix and Keef’s album in our ears.
