Keith Giffen and Kody Chamberlain’s TAG Comic Book is Getting the Movie Treatment

Imagine if the game of Tag was inspired by a curse passed from person to person by touch. That was the premise of Keith Giffen and Kody Chamberlain’s comic book miniseries Tag, which was one of the first titles published by Boom! Studios back in 2006. Now, 20th Century Fox and Boom! Studios are bringing Giffen and Chamberlain’s Tag to the big screen.

The original Tag miniseries followed a man who was “tagged” by a stranger only to discover soon thereafter that his body was rotting away because of the curse. While searching for the origins of the curse, he had to decide whether to let it die with him or if he should pass it on to another person. For the feature adaptation of Tag, the lead character is being re-envisioned as a woman.

Ensuring the creepfactor remains high, Annabelle director John Leonetti is slated to helm the adaptation, with Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski attached as screenwriters. The movie rights for Tag were originally set up at Universal, but since the rights reverted back to Boom!, it falls under the company’s first-look deal with Fox. Boom! Studios’ Ross Richie, Stephen Christy, and Adam Yoelin are attached to Tag as producers. Under the terms of Boom! Studios’ deal with Fox, the comic company will receive first-dollar gross if Tag is made, which Boom! will then split with Giffen and Chamberlain.

Other Boom! Studios titles currently in development as films include the critically beloved Lumberjanes, Imagine Agents, and The Foundation.
