Kaiju Chaos: The Pacific Rim Trailer is Here

Kaiju? Jaegers? A year ago many of us had no idea that these words would turn out to be our most anticipated film adversaries of 2013. Pacific Rim has all the trimmings to be one of the greatest geek out movies of all time, balancing our love of all the classic Kaiju films of Japan with good old fashioned American sci-fi action (from a Mexican director no less). It’s an all new kind of war movie. “Today we are canceling the apocalypse!” We just can’t see this movie soon enough. And is that GLADoS as the computer voice on the Jaeger Gypsy Danger? (UPDATE: Yep.)

Official Synopsis:

Pacific Rim

(Warner Bros. Pictures/Legendary Pictures)

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

In 3D and 2D in select theaters and IMAX on July 12

NOTE: Nerdist Industries is owned by Legendary Pictures but remains editorially independent. Plus, it’s a Guillermo del Toro blockbuster. Come on. We’d be all over it no matter what.

    @Aj
    Agreed.

    @Grabnorg
That was my ‘initial’ thought too.

This is good and all, but I still want to see something like “Evangelion, Big-O, Gundam, or even Full Metal Panic!” brought to live-action film on a big-budget.
But, alas, I can’t really see very many US production companies willing to take a chance on something as “deep & thought provoking” as any of the good mech anime series are. They’d lose the whole ‘deeper meaning’ behind some of that stuff in the process of “American-izing” it. And end up with a major flop, just like they did with their sorry excuse for a movie called “Dragonball Revolution”…

Anyway, if a US production company doesn’t do something soon with those incredible franchises, they’re going to lose out big in the next 10yrs or so. Because, by then someone will have been willing to take the risk, and everyone else will be wondering why they didn’t think of that.

I just hope in the end these movies aren’t as shallow as some of the more recent action movies have been… coughxpendbles.

@john48221 – That would be really cool if done well.

  5. Suzy says:

They always got to destroy the Golden Gate Bridge, don’t they

  6. CapeMonkey says:

Nothing about how the NYCC interview mentioned in that Escapist article was for the Nerdist podcast?

  7. John48221 says:

Does this mean the Xbox Kinect game will have you moving in synch with another person?

  8. Buntcake72 says:

    Nut…busted.

    Time for a nap.

  9. JetpackBlues says:

@WeR1: Agreed. With movies like this, and others that came before it like “Casshern” (2004) and “Space Battleship Yamato” (2010) (Which beat out “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in Japan), making anime into ‘live action’ is happening. And it’s being done WELL.

Well, except for “AKIRA”, thank God….

Even computer animated/motion capture anime movies like “Appleseed Ex Machina” (2007) get producers like John Woo working on them.

If James Cameron would stop it with the ‘Space Indians’ and just make “Evangelion” already, we wouldn’t be heralding Del Toro’s first. But I’m sure we’d still be hyped as hell to see it.

Seems like Del Toro beat Cameron to the (rocket) punch, so to speak.

  10. Stephanie says:

Okay, I’ll admit it. I giggled like a little girl when that was over. I’m so stupidly excited. I can’t wait to see the trailer on the big screen!

  11. Evan says:

I just filled the cup… Dear Zeus that was a nice sell for this movie. I’m in.

  12. WeR1 says:

This is so close to an anime story, come on now mech suits! Hopefully it opens a door for more live action anime being pushed to being produced.

  13. Grabnorg says:

Some Big O shit up in this bitch.

  14. Taylor M. says:

You had me at rocket punches.

  15. JetpackBlues says:

WHUAHOOWHUT? Holy shitkaiju! I can’t think/type after seeing that!

    AWESOME!

  16. Sooo is this How a Evangelion live action movie would look like? GROOVY.

  17. valhallaarwen says:

This is the second trailer I have seen this week that looks like a summer blockbuster. This past summer sucked so bad that I need to have another boy summer (that means action films). That looks like it will be the best thing ever.

  18. Aj says:

Of all the trailers i’ve seen in the past week, this towers over them. Seriously, it’s the hypest shit!
I was just looking forward to this movie, now I can’t fucking wait!
(Also: i’ve read some places people are comparing this to Evangelion. Those people either didn’t really watch Eva, or didn’t understand it)

  19. To Hell with Transformers this is the movie INEED TO ….SEE!

  20. NeuroMan42 says:

Sons of Anarchy and Aperture Science use Robotech to fight Cthulhu, with GLaDOS running the mech suits. EPIC!!!

  21. Kelley says:

GLaDOS : The Movie, eh? 😉

In all seriousness, it’s almost jarring to have her voice not only in there, but so heavily promoted.

Worth a watch, though. I always love seeing new Sci-Fi movies.

  22. Tom says:

    Robot Jox v 2.0?

  23. Eric K. says:

    WOW…just…WOW!
