A new trailer for Justice League is here, and man oh man, did this one give us a lot to chew on. You can watch the new trailer below, and then we’ll unpack everything we saw.
For starters, this trailer features our first look at Henry Cavill as Clark Kent in any Justice League trailer.
We’ve known Superman would be in the movie since day one, but this is the first time we see him in the flesh. Or is it in the flesh? He appears in a cornfield outside his house talking to Lois Lane (Amy Adams) as he mentions that she said “yes” to his marriage proposal in Batman v Superman. But, of course, it looks like it’s all a dream.
We also get another good look at the flashback sequence that is said to open the film, which features the Amazons, the Atlanteans, and mankind versus the forces of Apokolips. Bruce Wayne’s Ben Affleck been having bad dreams (“visions?”) We do see something we’ve never seen before in any of these trailers–we see what appears to be a human man transforming into a Prademon in the middle of the battle. Is that was Steppenwolf‘s (and therefore Darkseid’s) main goal on Earth is? To turn its population into a mindless drone army? Or maybe the goal is to harvest instead of invade? It seems so judging from that shot. Also, among the Amazons are Wonder Woman scene stealers Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta and Robin Wright as Antiope.
We then see a lot of heroic shots of the various Leaguers. Commissioner Gordon (J.K. Simmons) turns on the Bat-signal, and we see Aquaman (Jason Momoa) in his underwater environment, Diana (Gal Gadot) atop a statue in London (has she moved from Paris to London?), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) in what looks to be his apartment, and the Flash (Ezra Miller). Aquaman tells Bruce Wayne, “A strong man is strongest when he’s alone.” A confused Bruce says, “That’s not the saying, that’s like the opposite of what the saying is.” Based on the style of dialogue and banter, I’d say that’s our first confirmed Joss Whedon moment in the trailer.
The trailer features a ton of quick cuts of action beats, including Aquaman getting thrown hard against a large pillar underwater. Is this our first shot of Atlantis? Perhaps. We also get an amazing shot of Wonder Woman taking the alien general Steppenwolf head on. A few shots are recycled from the previous trailer, but then we see Batman in his ship, presumably the Flying Fox, heading towards a large energy dome.
The final part of the trailer shows red skies as far as they eye can see, which might be a nod to DC Comics‘ seminal event series Crisis on Infinite Earths. The League is doing battle in what looks like an abandoned warehouse district–no civilian casualties problems. This is likely a response to the criticism of the final battle from Man of Steel. We get a super cool moment of sure-to-be scene stealer Aquaman getting thrown mid-air by Cyborg at a Parademon. It’s pretty sweet, I must say.
The trailer wraps with Flash acting giddy as he sees the Bat-signal, and the humor of this scene feels like another Whedon add-on. This trailer seems to combine Zack Snyder’s visual polish and talent for action scenes with Whedon’s gift of giving characters tons of heart and humor. Hopefully, this combo works for audiences and fans this November.
Another, slightly different trailer was released on the Justice League Instagram account.
Justice League opens on November 17.
