Jumbo 1:6 scale action figures are not every collector’s priority, this much is certain. But when they’re done right (and when they’re scaled up versions of classic figures rather than awkward original sculpts), it’s hard not to stand back appreciate the final results. Often with companies, scale trumps quality when designers produce the 1:6 scale merchandise. But Gentle Giant LTD has struck gold with a winning formula for jumbo figures: take existing sculpts of beloved retro 4″-6″ figures and scale those up. The company has up-sized classic retro figure molds from Marvel, DC Comics, Star Wars, and Alien and today we’re taking a look at the DC figures.
The early 90s brought us Batman: The Animated Series and all was right and good in the world. That series (which I find myself referencing a lot, lately) capitalized on the noir aesthetic of Tim Burton‘s 1989 Batman, but infused it with a sense of whimsy, accessibility, and high-caliber serial storytelling. Kenner, a company that produced the bulk of my childhood toy collection, licensed the series for a line of action figures and churned out a hefty portion of the B:TAS carousel of characters. Batman and Robin were shoe-ins to get their own figures, but Kenner took care to also create a Man-Bat (Kurt Langstrom) figure with impressive articulation and wingspan as far as 1990s action figures go. Catwoman, The Penguin, The Joker, and Two-Face, and others followed suit. Gentle Giant LTD has produced jumbo figures for Catwoman, Robin, and The Joker, and all three are now available for preorder. (Fun story: I still have my original Kenner Catwoman, but I have no idea where the whip is.)
DC Comics and Kenner also released a line of figures in the early/mid 80s known as the Super Powers collection. From that line, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Lex Luthor, and Green Arrow are available in jumbo size, scaled up from the original 1984 molds. We’ve included a few photos in the gallery below of a few of these figures. All jumbo collectibles mentioned stand at 12″ tall and are currently available for pre-order through the Gentle Giant LTD website.
