While the rest of us are busy tinkering away on our Life Model Decoys to send to do our day jobs so we can stay home and watch Joss Whedon’s forthcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, the folks behind the series are hard at work themselves and now have a new name and a Whedonverse cast member to show for it. Because Marvel’s titles are never long enough, the show is now officially known as Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which rolls off the tongue like a Ron Burgundy vocal warm-up. This news came alongside the release of the official synopsis, which sheds some light on the band of ragtag, ultra-elite misfits that the now-breathing Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) will guide through each week’s A, B and C plots:
Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide law enforcement organization S.H.I.E.L.D. He puts together a small, highly trained, team of Agents to tackle the cases that havenât been classified yet, the new, the strange and the unknown. That team consists of straight arrow Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), an expert in combat and espionage; pilot and martial artist Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen); and brilliant if socially awkward scientists Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). Theyâll be joined by civilian new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).
Although casting has, for the most part, avoided dipping into the Whedonverse talent pool (we’re still hoping for Fran Kranz as MODOK), TV Line has reported that Angel actor J. August Richards will join the cast in a âsuper top-secret role.” Well, he’s a member of S.H.I.E.L.D., presumably, so the secrecy makes sense. Here’s hoping that we’ll finally see David Mitchell, a.k.a. Human Top, on national television. Seems plausible, right?
Why is he suppose to stay away from former Buffyverse characters? They are all fantastic and I would love everyone of them back. Except for David Boreanaz because I love him in Bones. I am more than excited for this show. It’s about time we get him back on the small screen.
OMG AUGUST RICHARDS IM SO EXCITED!!!!!!
Great to see Whedon cast some newbies! Holla at me Josh 😀

Joss Whedon is given a television show with more money and confidence than ever before. Have faith.
I hope this show turns out to be a great as the movies ,and not a lame attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the movies .
I’m hoping that we get to see Jimmy Woo and/or The Agents of Atlas in this series.
I love Whedon. Deeply. But seriously? Majority white cast, with the two east-asian actors playing the martial artist and the computer hacker? I was holding out faint hope that the song in “Commentary!” lampshading his own shitty racialised casting choices would translate into a change in the future. Oh well.
Still hoping for Fran Kranz, but can’t get his name right…
The Human Top’s a good guess, but I’m leaning more towards Nick Fury, Jr. They already introduced the character in the comics in order to have a black Nick Fury in the main 616 universe–and comic Junior’s best buddy was a guy who turned out to be Phil Coulson.
Charles Gunn back on TV? It’s about time.
