Joss Whedon’s TWIST Creates New Female Superhero

Joss Whedon returned to San Diego Comic-Con this year following a hiatus wherein he was directing a little movie about a puppet without strings and the sun being real low, big guy. Whedon took to Hall H on Saturday for an hour of Q&A with devoted fans. Before he dove into the questions, though, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator talked about having gotten “very old” in the intervening years and being without a film project now for the first time in quite awhile. This has given him the opportunity to get back in the saddle of a medium he adores, and has made his own: comic books.

Teaming up with Dark Horse Comics, who sponsored the panel, Whedon announced he’s working on a comic book series entitled Twist, which he describes as answering the question on everybody’s minds: “Why isn’t there a Victorian female Batman?” He didn’t give any more details than that, but he maintained his admiration for Dark Horse as a company, especially for perpetuating officially-licensed product storylines, as they have with Buffy, Angel, and Firefly.

Whedon, as you know, has long been a proponent of creating strong yet vulnerable female heroes, and he will continue to do so with Twist. He also calls her a very dark character, comparing her at times to the Dark Willow storyline from Buffy. He also joked, “Everybody’s super happy with the way I handled Natasha in Age of Ultron.” Hey, nobody’s perfect.

Are you excited for Whedon’s return to comics? Does Twist seem like it’s right up your alley? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
