While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Kurt Russell is widely rumored to be playing Star-Lordâs dad in the much anticipated sequel, the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series has cast another sci-fi icon to fill that role: Star Trek: The Next Generationâs Jonathan Frakes!
Frakes is joining the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series as the voice of J’Son, the emperor of the Spartax galactic empire and Peter Quillâs father. This is the animated seriesâ first major departure from the canon established by director James Gunn in the Guardians of the Galaxy feature film. However, JâSon of Spartax has been established as Star-Lordâs father in the Marvel universe since 1977, when he was created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne. Recent appearances of JâSon in the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series have depicted him in a more villainous light.
“I’m thrilled to be part of another great sci-fi franchise,â said Frakes while speaking with USA Today. âAnd I’m also lucky that the character of J’Son just happens to sound like me.”
Long time Disney fans may also recall that Frakes provided the voice and likeness of David Xanatos on the Gargoyles animated series. Frakes has also voiced an adult version of Finn on Adventure Time.
Frakesâ first appearance on the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series will kick off a new storyline that begins when Star-Lord (Will Friedle) goes missing on Spartax. Disney XDÂ will air the episode on Sunday, March 13.
