John Williams to Begin Work on STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII Soon

Rey captured the hearts of many Star Wars fans when she made her debut in The Force Awakens. Daisy Ridley’s earnest performance made the character stand out, even to John Williams. When Episode VII debuted, Williams told the LA Times he fell in love with Ridley immediately and came up with a strong and thoughtful theme for her character. His admiration of Rey was key to him agreeing to score Episode VIII; he said as much at a concert in Boston on Saturday.

Williams performed a selection of his music, including Star Wars pieces, alongside the Boston Pops at Tanglewood. MassLive reported on Williams comments about Episode VIII. The composer said he’ll be beginning work on the Episode VIII score in a few weeks after viewing an early cut. Given some of the memorable themes Williams has created for the second films of each trilogy–“The Imperial March” from The Empire Strikes Back and “Across the Stars” from Attack of the Clones come to mind–I expect great things from the Episode VIII soundtrack.

As to why he accepted the invitation from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy to compose for the next Star Wars film, it goes back to Rey. Williams said he was so enchanted by Ridley’s portrayal of Rey that he doesn’t want another composer scoring her scenes. I understand your Rey feels, Mr. Williams.

This seems like a fine occasion to discuss your favorite pieces of music in Star Wars. Share your picks in the comments.
