Joe Madureira Launches BATTLE CHASERS: NIGHTWAR Video Game Kickstarter

Back in 1998, writer and artist Joe Madureira launched his creator-owned comic, Battle Chasers through the Cliffhanger imprint of Jim Lee’s WildStorm Comics. However, the production of Battle Chasers quickly slowed to a crawl and only nine issues were produced before the series went on hiatus in 2001.

Earlier this year, Madureira announced plans to bring Battle Chasers back as both a comic and a video game. Today, Maduriera and Airship Syndicate launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the Battle Chasers: Nightwar video game. As of press time, the Kickstarter campaign has already raised almost $250,000 of the $500,000 funding goal.

Maduriera is producing Battle Chasers: Nightwar alongside several of the video game developers that he collaborated with on Darksiders and Darksiders 2 at Vigil Games. The format of Nightwar is JRPG with turn-based-combat that will allow gamers to step into the roles of the main characters from the Battle Chasers comic. The storyline for Nightwar is also said to be a “companion story to the events of the [Battle Chasers] graphic novel.”

The Battle Chasers comic was a fantasy/arcanepunk story that followed the outlawed war golem known as Calibretto (pictured above), a nine-year-old girl named Gully who had a pair of magically empowered gauntlets; a bounty hunter called Red Monika, the wizard Knolan, and  a reluctant swordsman named Garrison (pictured below).

Powerhouse Animation Studios will also produce short animated segments for Nightwar that depict key story moments in the game.

Currently, Battle Chasers: Nightwar is only planned to come out on PC and Mac, “both on Steam and DRM-free on GoG.” However, versions of the game on Xbox One and Playstation 4 may follow if the Kickstarter campaign reaches its stretch goals.

Additionally, Maduriera confirmed that the Battle Chasers comic will resume with issue 10, but it may not come out until the Nightwar video game is ready to be released in either late 2016 or early 2017.
