Editor’s Note: this is a post about season seven of Game of Thrones—which means a ton of speculation and a couple of spoilers. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

One of the most beloved actors in all of England will be heading to Westeros next season in an unnamed but “significant” role—and we’re pretty excited about it. Nerdist can confirm that everyone’s favorite British grandpa, Jim Broadbent, has been tapped for a role in the seventh season of HBO’s critically acclaimed adaptation of George R.R. Martin‘s behemoth, Game of Thrones. And though the network is staying mum on details outside of those given to Entertainment Weekly, we’re fairly certain we know who he’s playing.

Needless to say, don’t read on if you don’t want spoilers! (It’s your final warning!)

OK, everyone here good? Well, remember last week when we brought you new details about roles being cast for the upcoming seven episodes? We even did a Nerdist News episode about it! Here, I’ll wait while you watch:

Well there’s one role in this lot that jumps out at us as pitch perfect for someone with as an esteemed resume—Harry Potter, Cloud Atlas, London Spy, literally anything else that’s ever come out of the U.K. since 1971, basically—as Broadbent’s. Namely: the Priest.

As noted in the original report from Watchers on the Wall, the Priest role is listed as “a venerable priest with moral authority and gravitas. The show is seeking a white actor, using an RP accent, with characterful face for this part. He’s scheduled to shoot one week, from September 22nd.”

So a few things to note that Broadbent has in spades: gravitas? Check. Moral authority? Double check. Characterful face? TRIPLE CHECK, THERE IS LITERALLY NO MORE CHARACTERFUL A FACE IN ALL OF THE WORLD. This has to be the role in which Broadbent has been cast. But that’s not even the most exciting part of it—it’s who we think this “priest” may be.

Namely, we don’t think he’s a priest (in the Westerosi sense) at all, but rather the head maester in Oldtown (or at least a very important maester that may be connected to Pate, Archmaester Walgrave, who could end up an amalgamation of several important Citadelians for the TV adaptation)—a man who holds many secrets and from whom Samwell Tarly (and in turn, us the audience) will learn the truest secrets of the Realm. Plus, with their desire to get as much actual winter into their shoot, it makes logistical sense that they would shoot the interior stuff that has little need for winter time first (the priest role is set to shoot the week of September 22, fairly early in their schedule, and not too far off from now, which makes the timing of this announcement pretty on-the-nose for this part).

Of course we could be wrong—this could be a new Red Priest or even a Septon sent to tussle with Cersei—but we’re fairly certain this role is a bit more major than all of that. Though wouldn’t it be incredible if it turned out, like, R’hllor was actually just Professor Horace Slughorn? ONE CAN ONLY HOPE.
