BRB, crying forever. While The Flash is, in this writer’s opinion, easily one of the best, fully-realized superhero adaptations on TV right now, it is missing one thing: Jesse L. Martin, a.k.a. Detective Joe West singing. In like, every episode. The Broadway veteran has a voice like smooth honey, and while we admit it’s a little out of character for him to burst out into “I’ll Cover You (Reprise)”, we still think it might benefit the story/our lives if he’d jazz it up now and again.
Now, thanks to Joss Whedon (she said for the millionth time), we get to hear Martin and his Flash costars/Kickstarter partners Rick Cosnett (Eddie Thawne) and Carlos Valdes (Cisquo) sing A GOSPEL VERSION THE SERENITY BALLAD. No, this is not a drill. Martin, Cosnett, and Valdes filmed the video as a thanks to Whedon, who contributed “an outstanding amount” to their Kickstarter for a collaborative musical short film, The Letter Carrier, described below:
“A mother hides her family from slavery in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The children have grown up with a tale of a man known as The Letter Carrier. As the legend goes, he roams the mountains looking for children to sell as slaves. Painted against this historical backdrop, it is a raw, mysterious, and interpretive fable. Told through a cappella song, using original folk music, spirituals and a score using only natural sounds.”
Not only does this folksy, musical Kickstarter sound like something we absolutely need to see, we love this beautiful mash-up of fandoms colliding. All we need now is to get the cast singing some songs from “Once More With Feeling” and we’ll be set for life.

Made my day over and over… each time I listen it makes me smile!
Well Grant Gustin was AMAZING on Glee and they only let him sing one line in the karaoke episode of The Flash. Oh and this was awesome! I hope they do pull a Whedon!
Well, my ovaries just exploded with joy.
Why wasn’t Grant Gustin part ofthis? He was in Glee, I know that boy can sing!
I know right? Anyone who says otherwise should go look up the scene from the Michael Jackson episode ‘Smooth Criminal.” GLEE was AWESOME! I mean, you don’t like the show, fine, but if you knock the singing, you must be tone deaf or think “music” is repetitive bass thumping and words spoken (NOT SUNG) so fast you can’t hear it.
We need more singing shows, there is a whole generation of plebeians who don’t appreciate good singing and amazing voices. Or, for that matter, how to type whole words…
I liked them better when Neil Young was in the group.
This was amazing, and The Letter Carrier sounds like it will be an incredible show. I happily give then my money and look forward to seeing the film once it’s released.
Okay, awesome version of the Serenity theme song. But I have to put this out there – I can’t ever hear this song without it reminding me of TMBG’s ‘Particle Man’. Is it just me? Anyone else get this?
That was SHINY!
Once More, With Feeling is the best EVER Whedon Buffy musical
Isn’t it the only Whedon Buffy musical?
Why isn’t Grant Gustin a part of this? Haven’t heard him sing since Glee.
He sang in one episode of Flash, when they went to karaoke
That was Brilliant!!
I admit, I got a bit teary eyed. That was amazing!
That. Was. Awesome.
FREKING AWWWSOME! HAD ME IN TEAMSPEAK GUYS!
Um, so that was the most awesome thing today. Hands down!
Holy, holy crap! That mad my entire day–thanks!
adorable
This made me happier then it most likely should have. Great voices and great song. “I am a leaf in the wind”
Gave me chills, so cool!
Incredible.
This just made me smile!!!
This Rocks!!
Just never in a Flash episode.. It was bad enough in the karaoke episode being reminded of his embarrassing Glee past.
That was beautiful, thank you. :’)
This little kid in my head is having a sugar high style freak out. If Fire Fly ever does a reboot, they deserve at least cameo for this one.
i know some of them have said they don’t want a musical episode…but OMG it would be amazing
this just cleared the dark hotelpocalypse clouds a bit.. love it
I forgot how to breathe during that rendition. Beautiful.
That was absolutely perfect!
This is awesome! But it’s not gospel, it’s a cappella!
It’s can be both. “A cappella” describes music that is performed by singers without the assistance of instruments, “gospel” describes a genre of music. They are not mutually exclusive.
Correct, Kent. Moerover, the term A Cappella actually originated in application to the latin baroque style choirs and so traditionally is more structured, clipped and precise – more like you see in the Welsh choirs, or any of the traditional English/European religions (Anglican, Catholic, etc), where as Gospel tends to be more rhythmic and fluid with less formal/structured, and can apply to a musical style, not just a vocal style.
Absolutely the coolest thing on the web today!!!
Wow that made me happy!
Absolutely love this! It’s just made my day 🙂
