Jeremy Renner just decided to give fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe a little bit of present today by posting not one, but three of what appear to be pieces of promo/concept art for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War via his Twitter account. To say that these pics are spoilery is something of an understatement. So if you want to go into Civil War next year with totally fresh eyes, you might not want to look much further.
Still with us? Ok, let’s break these puppies down.
First pic is Renner in an all new Hawkey costume, which seems to cover a lot more of his body, and in a tip of the hat to the comics, is purple. On Renner’s shoulder is an itty bitty Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. (It’s so cute!)
Which means I pray that we eventually get a scene with these two guys that evokes this classic Avengers cover. I have a hunch we will. Make it happen Marvel!
In the next pic Renner shared, we actully have a pair of images that show off the two sides of the conflict in the titular Civil War, and they line up pretty much with what recent rumors said they’d be. On the pro-government registration side, we’ve got Iron Man, War Machine, Black Widow, The Vision, and newcomer Black Panther, ready to kick some ass.
Over on the anti-registration side,  and just as  eager to kick ass, we’ve got Captain America, Hawkeye in his new duds, The Falcon, Sharon Carter a.k.a. Agent 13, Ant-Man, and a now seemingly un-brainwashed Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier. We know he’s not brainwashed anymore because he no longer has black eye make-up on to tell us he’s bad. Plus, you know, he’s standing by his old buddy Steve.
Interesting to note that Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, who we know for a fact is in the movie, and based on the reports coming from D23, is on Cap’s side, isn’t included in this line-up, or in any of the art. Is it possible she’s sidelined early on, or maybe even killed?? I honestly doubt they’d kill the only other female Avenger besides Black Widow, but considering how powerful she is, maybe she chooses to not take sides in the final conflict at all, because let’s be honest, whatever side she’s on would have an unfair advantage.
And finally, Renner shared a classic comic book cover shot of the two teams coming at each other, ready to kick the crap out of one another, which is really what we’re all dying to see.
Now for the elephant in the room, or should I say, the spider? Yup, no Spider-Man in these pics. They’re holding that one back it seems, at least until we get a trailer, and I can hardly blame them (there’s a long time from now till May 2016 folks.) Also not anywhere is Mark Ruffalo, who was spotted on set and who is more or less confirmed as appearing. Also not spotted is Thor, but that’s because he’s actually not in this movie at all.
So there you have it Marvel fans. What do you think of these juicy new images? Disappointed there’s still no sign of Spidey, or were you really hoping for your first glimpse of Marisa Tomei as Aunt May? Let us know in the comments below!
