When we grow up we want to be justâthough we’d settle for halfâas cool as Jenny Lewis. Her latest solo album, The Voyager has been in fairly steady rotation for many of us here at Nerdist HQ since it came out in July of this year, and were enraptured at her KCRW Apogee session. Her latest performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers of current single “She’s Not Me” proves why she’s just bossing the shit out of life right now. Homegirl’s got it all figured outâor at least knows how to put it into songâbecause Jenny Lewis = total hero.
With the veritable magic that she and producer Ryan Adams created on the album, there’s little surprise that Lewis’ confidence shines throughout the whole of this particular “She’s Not Me” performance, but it doesn’t make it any less fun to witness. Introspection with a bubbly backbeat? What’s not to like, you guys? Eh?
But don’t just take our word for it. Watch the thing, remind yourself that Jenny Lewis is a total queen of open-heart lyrical goodness.
Like her previous single, “Just One of the Guys”, Lewis ruminates on the state of modern romantic dynamics with a refreshing folk-country-70s-pop-rock aura that manages to feel new even with its lyrical simplicity. The frilly, pastel almost flower-child vibe of her whole performance (in a rainbow power suit, to boot!) adds just the right amount of unexpected silliness to make the juxtaposition just that delicious.
