File this under “What? Noooo!”: according to a report from Variety, Edgar Wright has left Marvel’s Ant-Man and will no longer be directing the film. Marvel Studios has already found a new director to take Wright’s place, but there’s no word as to who exactly that may be. Joe Cornish, perhaps? Marvel and Wright decided to end their creative partnership “due to differences in their vision of the film,” in a joint statement. It seems like an amicable split between both parties and this will not affect the film’s release date of July 17, 2015. Rather, it will affect comment sections across the internet, which will inevitably light up in a tidal wave of WTFs, Nooooo’s, and Ugh, reallys.
We will update this story with more details as they become available. We will also update our faces once they revert from the utterly stunned expression they seem to be locked in at the moment.
Who would you like to see take over for Edgar Wright on Ant-Man? Let us know in the comments below or tell me on Twitter.
It’s more like What, Thank God, Great news in my book ๐
Nooooo! I was looking forward to seeing Edgar’s take on Antman since he is one of my favorite directors. Unfortunately his vision probably didn’t mesh with the aesthetic of past Marvel movies. Still, in my opinion, a dumb move to let that get in the way of a potentially awesome movie.
This was bound to happen…with Disney at the helm of all things MARVEL (and Star Wars) we can only expect these types of issues and creative differences to abound and depress us more and more in the years to come.
…and now Drew Goddard’s out of Daredevil. What’s next, plans for a Marville movie? Jaysus!
I feel Edgar should take Edgar’s place. I think the internet should throw such a shit-fit that Marvel realizes they shouldn’t get in the way. Maybe just a dream though.
Or maybe he just got a better gig.. Like prepping on Episode VIII…
โWhat? Noooo!โ sums up my reaction this afternoon.
Give it to James Gunn to direct.
Word is that Wright may have been behind schedule and over budget by a large margin. Haven’t confirmed that yet, though. We’re monitoring at SciFi4Me.
WTF! NOOOO! UGH, REALLY!
Maybe he has a better vision for the movie but Marvel exec. wants the traditional Marvel style- “The Happy-go-lucky” style and he doesn’t like it, because he is an artist, so he left..good for him
Beware the return of BRETT RATNER
Good, hated his ideas. Hank Pym is old, Ant Man is Scott Lang. It’s bad enough Pym and Wasp were not part of the Avengers, now not part of Ultron and now Pym is old and retired. Pym is one of my favorite characters but I almost wish this flick would not get made if it’s going to keep completely destroying history. GLAD this clown is gone, stay gone!
I wouldn’t be too relieved, it’s probably the same path marvel still has plans to go down. Who knows if that wasn’t what wright didn’t want all along? Most likely it’s a control thing as he realized he couldn’t have control over certain aspects as much as he wanted to have. Who knows?
Good GOD Mike you’re a fuckin nerd.
Was it the Ants?
Best case scenario for any Ant Man movie is that it will release straight to Vine.
David Lynch
I would really like to see David Lynch direct Ant-Man. Making the case that a director who has not had a commercially successful film since the Elephant-Man might be difficult to sell Marvel on.
oh well. If it was going to be anything like Shaun of the dead or hot fuzz I would’ve fallen asleep like 20 minutes into it anyway. I feel like this is a good thing.
Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz were two of the funniest movies ever made! You have no idea what you’re talking about.
Peter, man, while I love Shaun of the Dead and World’s End, B. Cook knows exactly what he’s talking about. I fell asleep in the theater watching “Hot Fuzz”, then got a refund. After hearing about how fantastic it was I attempted it again: fell asleep. I’ve honestly given it 4-5 attempts at this point and have never made it through. It’s grown on me, at least the parts I’ve seen . . . but, deliberate or not, the pacing kills me every time.
You should probably get checked for Narcolepsy mate
Hey Peter man! Check out channel 9, the breast exams are on!
Haha. Thats kind of funny
Gonna go ahead and say that Wright’s “vision” was better
Matthew Vaughan
Hmmmmmmm. HMMMMM.
I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords!

How about Jon Favreau
The release date is slated for next summer? The whole thing is probably like 90% done by now, right? He couldn’t stick around for a few more months? If Wright goes on to direct another Scotty P. flick, I suppose I can forgive him.
No way… Guardians of the Galaxy comes out in August and they’re still working on it. Post-production doesn’t take as long as it used to.
WTF??? NOoooooooooo!!! UUUUUUGggghhhh!!!!
This is very shocking news that will take years to get anyone at Marvel or Edgar to actually tell the real story of what went wrong.
Edgar Wright being on the project was one of the main reasons I was interested in the movie. His stylish blend of action and comedy sensibilities was perfect for Antman.
Bleh, I hope this isn’t the first death knell for the MCU.
This is just terrible. That movie would have been amazing. And we had been promised it for like 6 years.
Wow. Out of all of Marvel’s in-development projects (more obscure films, buttloads of tv projects), this is about the last one I expected to face problems, people have been raving about it for years.
I really hope Joss Whedon is involved in helping to Shepperd this film to completion, especially as that used to be his specialty as a script doctor.
