Just earlier this week, I was wondering how Fox planned to sell the ape/human conflict in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and it looks like the studio is going with something a little more nuanced for its longer, theatrical trailer (i.e., not setting the apes up to be terrifying and hairy murder machines).

In this Japanese trailer for the Matt Reeves’-directed (Let Me In), we get to see the home Cesar and his followers have made for themselves in the Northern California forests in the 10 years since Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Beyond the Japanese titles and narration, this isn’t too different from the trailer Fox is running before Days of Future Past. Jason Clarke’s character appears to be acting as the (possible) bridge between the surviving humans and apes, although with a ticked-off Gary Oldman in command of his own band of frightened humans, it doesn’t look like peace will survive.

That’s maybe the most intriguing thing about Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for me at this point: it’s being sold as a war story. It’s right there in the title: humanity isn’t going to come out ahead in this thing. With the homo sapiens population decimated by plague, and the evolved apes continuing to increase in numbers, I’m wondering if Dawn will pull the trigger on a downer ending with humans enslaved by our new ape overlords.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be in theaters on July 11th.
