James Gunn Teases Mantis in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 Storyboard

We’ve seen Ant-Man, we’ve seen the Wasp, we’ve even seen a new Spider-Man, but James Gunn unveiled the first glimpse of another insect-named hero via a storyboard for his much-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2–Mantis!

In a post to his Facebook, Gunn showed off his own storyboard for a particular scene and it would appear that the movie version of Mantis will also be sporting her trademark green antennae, though Gunn is quick to point out that the way any character looks in the board might not be how they really look.

Though Gunn doesn’t name any of the three characters in the storyboard, the antennae would certainly give away that this is Mantis. Newcomer Pom Klementieff will play Mantis, as was confirmed by Gunn back in February. The character in the comics is a half-German, half-Vietnamese who was left with the Priests of Pama, a sect of the Kree, as an infant. As she grew up, she learned various martial arts including the ability to target specific weak points in her opponent. She’s a frequent ally and sometime member of the Guardians, so we’re getting new heroes right off the bat with this one. Gunn has also maintained that Peter Quill would remain the only Earth-born member of the Guardians, so it appears they’re going to be changing the origin of the character.

The storyboard also alludes to Kurt Russell being one of the other figures in the drawing, however we have no way to know who exactly the character is going to be. Gunn’s shorthand, quick drawings have done wonders to keep that particular secret under wraps.

Do you hope movie Mantis keeps her antennae? Let’s go ahead and speculate about who Kurt Russell is playing too! Comments, go to them now!
