Earlier this year, Ubisoft launched Tom Clancyâs The Division as its latest video game franchise. Now, Ubisoft is taking The Division to the big screen with Jake Gyllenhaal as the star and the producer of the film adaptation.
Variety broke the news of Gyllenhaalâs involvement with The Division, which means that he will have a hand in shaping the eventual adaptation even before a writer or a director joins the project. Ubisoft doesnât currently have a major film studio attached to make the film, and the report notes that another star may be lined up for the adaptation before the pitch is sent out to the various studios. Nerdist has reached out to Ubisoft, who declined to comment.
The Division is set in the near future as New York is devastated by smallpox outbreak. Within the world of the game, members of the Strategic Homeland Division attempt to restore order and seize control of the city. But the Division itself isnât exactly beloved by the people itâs been assigned to protect. Gyllenhaal will presumably play one of the primary members of the Division in the movie.
This isnât Gyllenhaalâs first video game movie. In 2010, he starred in the adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. While that movie failed to launch a franchise, Gyllenhaal has reestablished himself in several subsequent films, including End of Watch, Prisoners, Southpaw, and Nightcrawler.
Ubisoft has already lined up the Assassinâs Creed movie with Michael Fassbender at 20th Century Fox, and a Splinter Cell adaptation at Paramount with Tom Hardy attached to star. Assuming that The Division finds a studio soon, that could give Ubisoft a third potential feature film franchise.
