J.J. Abrams Pitched a WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT Sequel

In the era of remakes and sequels, there are few people I trust more with a beloved story than J.J. Abrams. So when listening to last week’s Nerdist Podcast, our level of excitement rivaled Chris’s flabbergasted, “You don’t just gloss over that!” For those not caught up on the episode: there’s a brief moment when Abrams drops the words “Roger Rabbit sequel” into conversation, and everyone in the room is thrilled. Go have a listen. We’ll wait.

OK, so! The year was 1989 and the internet was just a sparkle in the eye of some dreaming engineers. It was also about the time that a number of us started having dreams about being squished under an asphalt roller and squeezed out the other side like a tube of paint thanks to the 1988 film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The film starred the late Bob Hoskins (and Christopher Lloyd) in live action roles, and featured the voices of Charles Fleischer and Kathleen Turner as Roger Rabbit and his human wife, Jessica. It was a popular and critical hit with audiences as it blended live action and animation, and featured classic characters from film and television.

The film was such a success that sequels were almost immediately rumored and discussed though none ever came to fruition. This interview with J.J. Abrams is the first that has mentioned his own possible sequel pitch to Steven Spielberg, an executive producer on the original film. The podcast doesn’t give much detail—in fact, Abrams carefully says, “It went away before it really was anything.” So there won’t be uncovered scripts or storyboards for fans to find, but anyone who loved Who Framed Roger Rabbit is surely reading this and imaging the potential lens flares and cinematic quality that Abrams could have brought to the table.
